What qualifies as an Endangered Ecosystem?

There is currently no widely accepted standard for the rating of ecosystem rarity or endangerment in Canada. Therefore, applicants to the Endangered Ecosystems Fund need to make the case that an ecosystem is threatened or endangered. Qualifying properties could include:

  • Lands identified by programs like the Sensitive Ecosystem Inventory (e.g. coastal bluffs or mature mixed woodlands);
  • Ecosystems on the BC Conservation Data Centre’s Red & Blue lists (e.g. old Coastal Douglas Fir or cottonwood riparian forests);
  • Lands important to Species at Risk (e.g. grasslands or Garry Oak meadows);
  • Ecosystems that can otherwise be demonstrated to be threatened or endangered;
  • Lands not classified as endangered, but that buffer or protect threatened or endangered ecosystems and contribute to ecological integrity.
