What activities does the Endangered Ecosystems Fund support?

The Fund was established to support activities that directly benefit rare and endangered ecosystems in B.C. and the Yukon. Activities eligible for support from the Fund include:

  • The acquisition of interests in land, including, fee simple title, conservation covenants, leases, timber rights, rights of way, etc. Eligible costs could include part of the purchase price, the cost of appraisals, surveys and other professional services, or other costs directly related to securement of the property interest.
  • Habitat restoration, primarily for community-based projects.
  • Stewardship and education where initiatives educate or train individuals about land management issues and/or stewardship practices using materials such as tool-kits, fact-sheets, handbooks, workshops, etc. so that individuals can steward endangered ecosystems effectively and improve ecosystem health.
  • Land management, including the removal, maintenance or repair of structures (fences, small dams, hazards, etc), control of introduced species, biological inventories, management planning and monitoring.
  • Research that is applied to rare and endangered ecosystems and to the resolution of critical management information bottlenecks.

What activities are ineligible?

Recognizing that financial support for environmental conservation is insufficient in virtually every respect, the founders of the Endangered Ecosystems Fund chose to focus their philanthropy on ‘on-the-ground’ conservation activities taking place outside of core areas of government responsibility.

Advocacy activities (media campaigns, form letters, open editorial pieces, etc) and projects entirely within the responsibility of governments (watershed restoration, park maintenance, wildlife management, silvicultural activities, etc) are therefore not eligible for funding under the Endangered Ecosystems Fund.

All other activities that can support the conservation of endangered ecosystems are eligible for consideration including ‘core support’ for organizations with a strong focus on endangered ecosystems.
